The Colorado state budget shapes critical funding decisions that directly affect communities, nonprofits, and philanthropic initiatives. By understanding the intricacies of the budget, budget process and advocacy strategies, you’ll empower your foundation organization to strategically advocate funding for programs that matter most.
Philanthropy Colorado is making this learning series available to both our foundation members and their nonprofit grantees. Let's learn together for success together.
Parts 1 and 2 of the Colorado State Budget Series took place in April and May 2025.

You'll receive recordings of Parts 1 and 2 so that you can review them before the Part 3 Hand-on Workshop: Advocating with Legislators taking place in Denver on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
Part 1: Understanding the Colorado State Budget - April 2025
Colorado Fiscal Institute, with additional insights from the Common Sense Institute, guided our understanding of the state budget - how the budget has developed over time, where the state's money comes from, and how it’s allocated. This session provided a comprehensive breakdown of the big picture and insights on how state funding impacts key issue areas.
Part 2: Understanding the State Budget Process - May 2025
Our partner CFI next helped us navigate the executive and legislative budget processes in Colorado, learning the who, what, and when of budget creation, debate, and approval—and uncovering opportunities for advocacy along the way.
