Take Action: Protect Colorado Nonprofits and Communities from Proposed Foundation Excise Tax Increases

Tuesday, May 13, 2025

Dear Philanthropy Colorado Members,

Congress is considering a significant increase to the excise tax on private foundations' net investment income. This change could reduce the funds available for charitable organizations across Colorado, impacting services from food pantries to disaster relief.

Action Steps:
1. Review Your Organization's Policies:

“Lobbying against an increase to the private foundation excise tax falls within the self-defense exemption for private foundations” according to the Council on Foundations. However, before engaging in any advocacy, please consult your organization's guidelines regarding communications with legislators and seek legal advice as needed.
2. Access the Templates:

Template 2: Non-Private Foundation Ally legislator letter
3. Find and Contact Your Legislators: Visit the Philanthropy Colorado webpage Find and Contact Your Legislator to reach out to members of Congress from the Colorado congressional districts in which your foundation is housed and funds.

Your voice is vital in ensuring that charitable dollars continue to support those who need them most. The time for action is now.

Thank you for your commitment to Colorado's philanthropic community.
